TRAINING ON RESEARCH PITCHING
MAY THE 7TH AT 13–14:30 P.M.
Speaking clearly about complex ideas is a skill that anyone can learn. It’s especially useful for researchers who need to communicate about their work in an impactful yet understandable way to different audiences.
At this training you’ll learn the basic structure of a good research pitch. You will receive tips on how to construct and present a pitch, what kind of language to use and how to polish your presentation slides in a way that support your oral presentation. The training includes practical exercises to get you started with your research pitch.
The training will be held by communications specialist Reetta Rönkä from communications agency Kaskas Media. For the past two years Rönkä has been one of the head coaches of Research Pitching Competition by Slush & Skolar, a competition for young researchers with wild research ideas. As a former journalist and television and radio host she is extremely familiar with communicating to large audiences and delivering effective pitches.
You’ll also hear experiences from Senior Scientist Colm Mc Caffrey from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Mc Caffrey pitched his research idea last year at the Nordic’s biggest startup event Slush to an audience filled with thousands of people. How does a complex research topic turn into a compelling three-minute pitch?

TRAINING ON SOCIAL MEDIA USE
MAY THE 11TH AT 13–14:30 P.M.
Social media can be a powerful tool for a researcher to communicate about their work and interact with different audiences. It enables the quick distribution of information, following relevant conversations and building one’s professional brand.
At this training you’ll understand the benefits of using social media as a researcher and hear concrete examples of how to use it in the context of science and expert communication. You’ll also get tips on how to take a strategic approach to the use of social media and manage your time there effectively.
The training consists of three presentations:
- CEO Petro Poutanen from The Finnish Research Impact Foundation will give insight into why and how researchers and experts can benefit from using social media and how to participate in different conversations in an open and constructive way. Poutanen has over a decade of experience in coaching and consulting organisations, experts and leaders in questions related to communications, interaction and impact.
- Postdoc researcher Galina Kallio from the University of Helsinki Ruralia Institute will share her personal experiences on using social media as a tool for societal interaction.
